Laser hair removal FAQs

How does the laser remove hair?

The laser emits beam of light that is attracted to the pigment or melanin in the hair follicle that is in an active growing cycle. Pre-determined pulse duration energy settings are directed at and absorbed by the hair follicles, disabling the growth of the follicles, resulting in quick safe and effective hair removal.

What skin types and skin colors can be treated with laser hair removal?

Spa310’s Cynosure Apogee Elite System is designed for all skin types, and is an effective hair removal treatment for the broadest range of clients. Its revolutionary technology combines two optimal wavelengths in one system: the 755 –nm Alexandrite laser (for light skin) and the 1064-nm ND; YAG laser (for dark skin).

How many laser treatments will I need?

It has been our experience that most of our patients are able to discontinue treatments, knowing they will probably need an occasional touch up, after an average of 4-6 treatments, providing that the recommended treatment schedule is followed.  It is also important to understand that results may vary depending on the individual’s hair type, their stress levels, certain medications and different hormone levels. Keep in mind some individuals will require fewer treatments and some will require more treatments, depending on the desired results.

What is the advantage of using a laser?

Lasers are precise instrument that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. The laser uses a wide beam that treats many hairs at once instead of treating hair-by-hair like electrolysis. Because of this, large areas such as your leg, arms, or back can be treated in a short period of time. You will see results that last far longer than tweezing, waxing, shaving, chemical depilation, or other temporary methods.

Does it matter if my hair is light and very fine? Or if it is white, gray or red in color?

Hair color is an important factor in determining eligibility for laser hair removal. The light emitted from the laser is attracted to the dark pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle. Light, fine hair or gray, white and red colors may not have enough pigment to be successfully treated with the laser, while dark hair is treated most effectively. All laser hair removal services will start with a complimentary consultation so our aestheticians can help you decide if the service is right for you and your desired results.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The FDA has cleared laser hair removal, regardless of the type of laser, for “Permanent Hair Reduction” only. However, based on our experience, we believe that the hair is not likely to re-grow. Each individual’s treatment response may be different based on their hair or skin type. There are anywhere between 500 and 1,000 follicles per square cm or skin, many of which are dormant at the time of treatment. Because of that, there is no way of knowing if and when they may start growing and regrowth can be affected by stress levels, certain medications and different hormone levels. Ultimately we cannot guarantee that your laser hair removal will be permanent, but we and many of our clients have found it to be effective and worthwhile.
